Information on the various training sites in BC

Residents work across the province in a variety of sites to provide care to British Columbians and skills and experience for independent practice. Below is information compiled by your fellow residents on some of the sites they have worked. If you have anything to add to these sections, or have a site to add, please let us know.

BCCH/BCWH

BCCH and BCWH are located at 4480 and 4500 Oak Street, respectively. As BCWH and BCCH are currently under construction you will be directed once on site to where you can obtain an id and where the admin contact is located. A map is available here.

  • Parking

    Paid:

    • Parking is available around the hospital, however, you must be careful to read the signs closely. Many staff members have been towed and ticketed.
    • If you opt to park onsite you can pay staff rates (as of Oct 2015) approx 6$ 12 hours, 10$ 24 hours), just ensure you park in staff/visitor parking. Stalls specific to “patients” will not accept staff rates.
    • You can acquire a global parking pass at Parking Services as of 2013 this was in the “Chest Building” at VGH. The fee is $40.
    • The following departments get parking passes that are shared among Residents. For Residents outside of these departments, a receipt can be submitted to your department to receive petty cash back.

    • Bus number 17 stops right in front of the Oak St entrance to the hospital complex.
    • King Edward Station is approximately a 15min walk from the hospital.

    Intra-Hospital Shuttle

    • There is an intra-hospital shuttle available, details can be found on any hospital computer.
  • Resident Tips
    • There are VERY limited food options late at night so it’s important to pack a good selection or you will be eating from the vending machine.
    • If you need help you can call locating, just pick up the phone and call zero.
    • The current way BCWH is organized is as follows:

FSJH

Fort St. John Hospital is located on 112 Avenue. A map is located here.

KRIH

Kamloops Royal Inland Hospital is located at 311 Columbia Street. A map of the hospital is available here.

    • Food is available on site, but not 24hr.

    • In general, most residents appear to have accommodation organized that is within walking distance of the hospital.

KGH

Kelowna General Hospital is located at 2268 Pandosy St.

  • Food

     Cafeteria

    • The cafeteria is located on the main floor of the Strathcona Building.
    • Food services are available Monday – Friday from 8:00am – 6:15pm and weekends from 8:00am – 2:00pm.
    • Seating is open 24/7.
    • There is a Bistro in the lobby of the Royal Building open 7 days a week from 9:00am – 8:00pm.
    • Both the cafeteria and Bistro are cash or debit only.
    • There is a debit machine beside the Snack Shop.
    • A vending machine is located in the Clinical Academic Campus (CAC) across from the library.

    Perking Lot Coffee Shop

    • The Perking Lot is KGH’s one stop coffee shop located on the first floor of the Centennial Building. Opens at 7am and is operated by volunteers with all proceeds going towards Kelowna General Hospital’s Auxiliary Foundation.

    • There is a secured bike cage located in the parkade attached to the UBC Clinical Academic Campus which is accessible only with a security access card loaned to you upon your arrival for the duration on of your medical training at KGH

LGH

Lions Gate Hospital is located at 231 15th St E.

  • Food

    Cafeteria:

    • There is a cafeteria on main floor and a coffee bar there as well as gift shop that has small snacks.
    • Full meals are for purchase in the cafeteria.

    Blendz:

    • At the HOPE Centre there is a Blendz coffee shop on the main floor.

    There are many other food choices within a few blocks heading west to Lonsdale (one block away) or immediately crossing the street out the emergency exit one floor down from main floor and proceeding down 13th or 14th Streets.

  • Key Locations

    UBC Medical Education Center in the HOPE Center Level 2:

    • The UBC Medical Education Centre for LGH and Hope Centre is located on Level 2 Hope Centre. This UBC satellite site services both LGH 231 15th St., E. and the Hope Centre 1337 St. Andrews Ave., North Vancouver.  The administrative contact is Michelle Snyder michelle.snyder@ubc.ca
    • Lounge, Lockers, Showers, Call Suites and Scrubs – This is a student/resident Lounge in the HOPE Centre Level 2 by the call suites with TV/couch, seating area, kettle, toaster, microwave, refrigerator and dishwasher.
    • Washrooms are equipped with showers and assigned lockers to put your belongings in assigned at the beginning of your elective assigned by Michelle Snyder.
    • Call suites are assigned by rotation/elective with sign in sheets.  Scrubs and linens are located in the same call suite corridor in the supply closet.

    Library:

    • Located Level 2 Hope Centre in the VCH Academic Hub.  The Library is open Mon-Fri 8-5 and available after hours with your swipe card.

    Quiet Study Area: 

    • There is a open Quiet Study area in the UBC Medical Education Centre Level 2 Hope Centre.  In this space there are two VCH networked computers with dictation to use based on availability.
    • They are connected to the printer in the hall if needed.  Due to the open nature of the study area this room is not suited for meetings on your PC or phone.
    • If you are attending a zoom meeting or a meeting on your phone and need a private space please see Michelle Snyder room 2601 to locate an available suitable private space.

    Doctors Lounge LGH:

    • This is located on main floor of hospital if you walk just past the gift shop and turn right down the short corridor marked Health Records Services (heading towards acute tower).
    • Access code to lounge is 253.  There is TV/couch seating area, computers for you to use, kettle, toaster, microwave.
    • There are washrooms in the Doctors Lounge as well.
  • Parking

    Paid:

    • PARKING – staff rate of $5.50/day (no monthly rate) on site at Lot 144 LGH parkade/Lot 146 Hope Parkade or Lot 196 North Shore Hospice with a parking hanger.  To receive a staff parking hanger with staff rates, please obtain online through VCH Connect online application then choose the staff rate at the parking meter.     • Street Parking – There is a 2-hour limit parking within 4-block radius of the hospital but FREE parking in residential areas beyond this 4 block radius. Please contact Michelle Snyder with any questions.
    • Free parking is found at a nearby park! (13 th and Moody)

    Biking:

    • Outdoor bike racks are located at the 13th & 14th, 15th street entrances and North Shore Hospice Contractor Parking lot.

    • There is also two secure bike cages at either LGH or Hope Center Parking levels.

    • Please complete online request form for VCH Bike Cage membership application or request on the Photo ID eForm to add access for LGH Hope Centre.  Access to bike cages are with photo ID.  Please email commuting@vch.ca with questions.

NRGH

Nanaimo Regional General Hospital is located at 1200 Dufferin Crescent.

    • The cafeteria is open daily 8 AM – 6:15 PM.

    • There is pay parking at the hospital, but typically there is free parking available on the streets around the hospital.

    Biking:

    • There is a bike locker accessed by your ID card on the ground floor by Daycare and in the summer a call room is made available to store your bike in the OR.

RCH

Royal Columbian Hospital is located at 330 East Columbia Street in New Westminster. A map is available here. The administrative contact for the Medical Education office is Anna Esposito.

    • Medical Education is located in the Basement of the Health Care Centre (see directions). It has an exercise space, TV, games, computers and call rooms.

    Computers can be accessed in the following locations:

    • Health Records (located on the main floor of the Health Care Centre)
    • Library (Security/ID Card will provide you 24/7 access)

    There are also computers in some of the wards, but the above locations are preferred by residents.

    Dictation Spaces

    • Residents are reminded to be conscientious of patient confidentiality when dictating. Dictations can be completed in Resident Lounges and Call Rooms.
  • Parking
    • During construction, residents with a Braid parking pass can move their vehicle to the Sherbrooke lot starting at 1 pm, and anytime weekends and statutory holidays
    • Paid:
      • Daily parking is available in a lot on Keary Street for $5.25 per day. To apply for monthly parking, complete this form. Monthly parking is $45. You can also park in STAFF parking lots at Fraser Health Sites, including RCH.
    • Free:
      • There are 2-hour parking spots located around the hospital (map) in the more residential areas. A good place to look is on the streets directly above the hospital between East Columbia and Richmond streets.
    • Bikes:
      • Bikes can be stored either outside the Emergency Department or in the underground parking lot off Keary Street.
    • Public Transit
      • Sapperton Skytrain station is less than a block from the hospital. There are also numerous bus routes in the area (the closest being the 155, 128 and C9). Use the TransLink Trip Planner to assist you in selecting a route.
    • Intra-Hospital Shuttle
      • None at this site.

    • Computer access will be arranged by RCH admin
    • UBC Wifi is available with your CWL login
    • Lockers are available at RCH, but you will need to bring your own lock
    • Showers are located in the resident lounge

RGH

Richmond General Hospital is located at 7000 Westminster Highway. The admin contact is Caroline D’Sa, her office is in the ground floor rotunda and she provides parking passes. A map of the hospital is available here (last page).

    Paid:

    • Residents can get the staff parking rate ($4.50/day) in the parkade.
    • The Doctor’s parking lot is reserved for staff physicians.

    Free:

    • There is free street parking along Azure Road, usually a 5 minute walk from the hospital.

    Bikes:

    • The bike cage is inside the parkade, with the entrance off Gilbert Road. It requires card access. Showers care shared with the cardiac clinic.

    Public Transit

    • The 407 bus stops right outside the hospital. There is also Canada Line to Brighouse, then a 10 minute walk to the hospital.

    • Many rotations will require time at both hospitals. Pediatrics wards are exclusively at VGH.
    • RJH is close to downtown and may be within walking distance depending on the area in which you’re staying.
    • Call room space is ample at RJH.

SMH

Surrey Memorial Hospital is a publicly funded hospital in the city of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Located at 13750 96 Avenue
Surrey, B.C. V3V 1Z2 SMH is accessible by public transit including Expo line Skytrain to King George Station and Bus 96. A map is available here.

  • Key Locations

    Where to get parking pass

    You pay at the cashier on the second floor at SMH, in the connection between Critical Care Tower and the North building (older part of hospital), and you take the receipt to Kathleen McIntosh (administrator) on 3rd floor of Critical Care tower (UBC office), and she will give you the pass.

  • Parking

    Paid:

    • Parking at the hospital: North, South, & Tower Parkade
    • Cost: $5.50/day or $45/month, about $500/year
    • No street parking anywhere close by

    Bikes

    Bike locker located in one of the parkades, and one of the UBC administrators, Barbara Shield, will provide you with access to.

    There are also some bike racks in front of the main entrance of the hospital.

    Intra-Hospital Shuttle

    Shuttle from/to: King George skytrain station to SMH and JPOCS outpatient clinic.

  • Resident Tips

    There are 20 brand new Call Rooms and a very large resident lounge with a big fridge, water cooler, microwave, and TV. SMH is in the process of getting some gym equipment for the lounge as well.

    For some rotations, for example, General Surgery Residents are required to travel between SMH and JPOCS outpatient clinic in one day.

    There is also a walk-in clinic, physiotherapy, and massage therapy clinic across from the hospital.

    The Library is on the 3rd floor of the Critical Care tower, right beside the Call Rooms and Residents have access 24/7. There is one librarian at the library Tues-Friday 8am-4pm.

    Location of Computer Work Stations and where to dictate

    There are 2 computer stations in resident lounge, and 4-6 computers at the library. Residents will have access to these 24/7.

    There are phones in every call room (total of 20 call rooms), as well as 1 phone in the resident lounge and 2 phones at the library.

SPH

St. Paul’s Hospital is located at 1081 Burrard Street in Vancouver. A map of the hospital is available here. There is an orientation prior to residency where administrative information is provided. You can also speak with your program administrator. Providence Health Care ID photos are taken at VGH.

    In-Hospital

    • Cafeteria (4th floor of the Providence Building)
      • Serves hot entrees, soup, sandwiches, deli-bar, salad bar, beverages, and a variety of desserts and other treats. The cafeteria is open Monday to Friday from 6.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. and on weekends from 7:00 a.m. to 7.30 p.m.
    • Vending Machines near cafeteria

    Out-of-Hospital

    Out-of-Hospital food options include restaurants on Davie Street most of which open until 9pm.

    • Stepho’s Souvlaki Greek Tavern on Davie opens Monday-Sunday until 11:30pm
    • Beyond Cafe on Burrard and Comox (side entrance of SPH), which opens till 10pm on weekdays.

    Resident Lounge/Call Rooms

    Resident lounge and call rooms are located on the 6th floor of the Burrard building. The elevator right across from the gift shop goes straight up to the call room area.

    Once you get off the elevator, there are two sides, both of which have a lounge and call rooms (one side has designated call rooms, the other has free for all call rooms, which you can sign up for on the sheet on the door the day that you are on call).

    Computers

    Computer workstations are at every Wallaroo along the ward hallways. They are also available in the two resident lounges.

    Dictation Spaces

    Each ward has a small dictation room with a phone and computer, usually behind/close to the nursing station

    Library

    There is no librarian stationed here, but it is a nicely decorated study space in the basement of the hospital.

  • Network Access
    • You will be provisioned with a PHC network user ID and email address to use for the duration of your residency. Four weeks prior to the start date of your FIRST placement at PHC, you will receive an email on how to activate your network acces. If you do not receive an email, please contact the Medical Education Assistant at mededuc@providencehealth.bc.ca.
    • CareConnect user ID will be provisioned, if you do not already have one.
      • Didn’t receive a CareConnect user ID or need to reactivate an existing user ID? Use the online form. This form is only accessible from a computer on the health authority network.
      • If you have any issues with your CareConnect user ID, please email CareConnect at careconnect@phsa.ca or call the Service Desk at 604-875-4334.
  • Parking

    New Daily Pay Parkers

    All staff will be required to either pay at the pay station, pay by phone or show your staff ID at the attendant booth to purchase the discounted daily pay staff rate. Residents may obtain an Daily Pay hanger by completing the Daily Pay application and sending it to LMCparking@frasherhealth.ca, or if a Resident is here for less than 3 months, they may request a Daily Pay Temporary Pass.  You display one of these at all times in the GREEN ZONE parking area.  Temporary Passes can be picked up from Vivian at Medical Affairs Office, Room 542B (Burrard Building), below the Call Rooms.

    Yellow Zones

    Residents may no longer park in the Yellow Zones on P2. Yellow Zones are annually paid parking.

    Parking Reimbursement for On-call and Call-Backs

    According to the Resident Doctors of BC Collective Agreement, residents on-call who are called back to work can have their parking reimbursed.  Ensure that you keep your receipt(s) and submit to Vivian, who is located in room 542B (Burrard Building).

    For a parking pass call VGH employee parking services: 604-875-4111 (Ask for Parking Services).

    Bikes:

    There is a special lock-up area located in the Parkade of the hospital. You will need to have access added to your ID swipe card. Please call Protection Services at 68819 for access. Do not lock your bike to anything other than a bike rack, or it may be removed by Security.

    Public Transit

    Buses that go near SPH include:

    • #1 Burrard Station/Beach,
    • #2 Macdonald – 16th Avenue/Burrard Station
    • #22 Knight/Macdonald
    • #44 UBC/Downtown

    Intra-Hospital Shuttle

    There is a free employee shuttle that goes between SPH, BCCA, VGH, GF Strong, and Children’s Hospital daily Monday-Friday, except statutory holidays. The shuttle leaves every half hour from each site, beginning at 7:05 and the last one leaves at 17:05. The schedule is available here.

  • Resident Tips
    • On the main floor of the Providence Building, the exit in the stairwell at the end of the hallway after you pass the GI clinic and the U/S clinic brings you right to Davie Street, for easy access to food and coffee breaks. When you come back in this same exit, if you go one floor higher in the stairwell (2nd floor), you will end up right at the CCU!
    • The elevators in Providence Building are old and slow, and often show that they are going in the direction other than they are really going. You should just get on any elevator that comes.
    • Scrubs can be found in the ER and the OR. You can just take them from the cart.

VanGH

Vancouver General Hospital is located at 899 West 12th Avenue in Vancouver. The Photo ID Processing Centre is located at in Room 17 of the basement of the Doctors Residence, 2775 Heather Street. To obtain photo identification, you have to bring a piece of government- issued photo ID (Driver’s License, Passport, Citizenship Card, etc). Hours are Monday – Friday, 08:00-12:00 and 13:00-15:30, with the exception of statutory holidays. Contact vchphotoid@vch.ca or 604-875-4560. A map of the hospital is available here.

    Outside of VGH campus, places to eat include Falafully Good donairs and shwarma (3170 Oak St, between 15th and 16th), Shizen Ya sushi (1102 W. Broadway), 24/7 Thai (986 W Broadway, next to 7 Eleven; usually open until 3:00am), and Banana Leaf Malaysian food (820 W Broadway, Vancouver). There is also a Whole Foods market located near Broadway and Cambie (510 W 8th Ave).

    Call Rooms

    Located on the 2nd floor of Centennial Pavillion. You will need to swipe your access card to gain access to rooms. Call rooms are allocated to residents assigned to various hospital-based services, and your service chiefs can provide you with the room codes.

    Computers/Dictation Space

    The Doctor’s Lounge is also located on the 2nd of Centennial Pavillion, next to the call rooms. You will be able to gain entry with your access card. There are computers available for looking up laboratory and imaging results, and phones were you can dictate.

    Library

    There is a large Biomedical Branch Library on the second floor of Diamond Health Care Centre, which has a constantly updated catalog of medical textbooks and journals. There is 24/7 swipe card access (contact Brookfield GIS for access dhcchelp@brookfieldgis.com). They are staffed throughout the da, but hours change for the summer. Check on the UBC Library website for full hours, including weekend and holiday hours, which vary depending on the time of year.

    You can access Library Services via the hospital Intranet (called “VCH Connect” – opens up whenever you open Internet Explorer on a hospital computer).

    UpToDate is available on all hospital computers through VCH Connect as well, through a link on the main page.

    Drug information is available through VCH connect also, by clicking on the “Lexicomp Online” link on the main page.

    Lockers

    Men’s and women’s locker rooms are available to residents in the basement of Heather Pavilion. They require your own lock and are open 24hrs; for after hours access, the can be accessed through the basement tunnels (see map).

  • Parking

    In-Hospital:

    The main VGH parkade is located on Laurel St, between 12th and 13th Avenue, across the street from Jim Pattison and Centennial Pavillion. Daily parking is $8.00 if you show your hospital ID, otherwise it is $18.75 for 24 hours. Parking is also available at Diamond Health Care Centre (entrance on Laurel between 12th and 11th).

    Street:

    There are many 2-hour parking spots around the hospital (eg. on Oak between 12th and 11th), however be warned that residents who exceed this 2-hour stay have been ticketed by the City of Vancouver.

    Bikes:

    The new VGH Cycling Centre is located at 866 West 10th Ave in Vancouver. It offers more than 170 indoor bicycle parking spots, including 12 electric bicycle spots, lockers, showers, towel service, a lounge and a bike repair room for maintenance and tune-ups.     Public Transit

    Buses 15, 17, 9 and 99 B-Line all stop on West Broadway, close to VGH. Use the TransLink Trip Planner to assist you in selecting a route.

    Intra-Hospital Shuttle

    There is a shuttle bus that travels between St. Paul’s Hospital, BC Cancer Agency, Vancouver General Hospital, GF Strong, and Children’s Hospital daily Monday-Friday from 07:00-17:30, except statutory holidays. The schedule is available on VCH Connect (VCH Connect >> Programs and Services >> Inter-Hospital Shuttle Bus / Commuter Centre >> Inter-Hospital Shuttle Bus >> Shuttle Schedule), or at the Information Desk on the main floor of Jim Pattison Pavillion.
