Parenting Resources for Residents

Happy Mother’s Day to all our resident mothers and mothers-to-be! Parenthood is tough for everyone, but the added setting of residency makes it especially challenging. We admire all the mothers who balance their motherhood with the hard work of being a resident—you’re definitely a superhero. Resources to help mothers in residency who are expecting or already have children are available to try and make the experience a little easier:

  1. Our website has a dedicated Parenting section that covers everything you need to know (and then some) before leave, during leave, and after returning to work. Topics such as your finances, pregnancy during residency, adoption, and your first rotations are available amongst others for anyone currently a parent, expecting, or considering.
  2. Employee Wellness offers services specific to parenting. If you ever feel overwhelmed—which all parents do!—they offer counselling services to work through what’s on your mind and in your life. As a physician focused service, they understand well the realities of residency.
  3. Resident Wellness Office provides a support group for residents on leave, which includes maternity and parental leave. If you are starting to feel isolated from your peers, or just miss having fellow residents who know your life around you, we highly recommend attending a session to see if it’s a good fit. There are two upcoming meetings: May 11 and May 18. Email resident.wellness@ubc.ca to register!

Residents, have you called that special person in your life yet? We know residency is busy, but why not pick up the phone and give that special person a call today letting them know how much you appreciate them.
